Yayoi Kusama (born 1929) is a Japanese contemporary artist known for her immersive installations, polka dot motifs, and exploration of infinity. Emerging from childhood hallucinations, she moved to New York in the late 1950s, becoming a key figure in the avant-garde scene with her infinity net paintings and provocative happenings. After returning to Japan in the 1970s, she voluntarily admitted herself to a psychiatric hospital, where she continues to live and create. Her Infinity Mirror Rooms, pumpkin sculptures, and large-scale installations have made her one of the most celebrated living artists, with exhibitions worldwide. Kusama’s work explores self-obliteration, mental health, and the boundlessness of the universe, leaving a lasting impact on contemporary art.
