Banksy is one of the most famous living artists in the world. He is an anonymous British street artist and political activist who has been creating darkly humorous graffiti art since the 1990s with a distinctive stencilling technique.
His real identity is a closely guarded secret and there are numerous theories circulating about his real identity – from the front man of Massive Attack to the former Art Attack presenter Neil Buchanan. We’re really hoping the latter is true.
In 2006 his wall art crossed over from being graffiti into the mainstream, setting records at auction for art prints which had previously changed hands for hundreds or sometimes thousands. Banksy’s fame has mean that interest in street art has rocketed and he has laid the foundations for many other street artists to thrive.
